This artwork will be included in two international exhibits. It will be on display as part of the International Day of Colors on May 2, 2013 in Thessaloniki, Greece. Additionally, "Orcado" will be featured in an exhibit at the Ergogallery in Aitolitko, Greece during August 2013.

Shozo Memorial Exhibition - Japan

Shozo Shimamato (1928 - 2013) was a co-founder of the Japanese avant garde art group - Gutai. He is regarded as one of the most daring and independent experimentalists of the international art scene during the 1950's and continued to explore/expand art boundaries until his death. I'm humbled to contribute an artwork to a memorial honoring Shozo and his influence on contemporary art. The Shimamoto Art Lab will exhibit and archive the artworks in honor of Shozo's inspiration.

These artworks (each one a unique variation on my visual theme) will be included in the exhibit: Fluxfest Chicago 2013. Several of the limited edition pieces will be selected by the curator, Keith Buchholz and sent to various international museum collections. (The information will be posted here when available.) In keeping with the Fluxus concept of art accessibility, the remaining artworks from this edition will be available for the audience to take away from the Chicago Cultural Center on February 23, 2013 for free.

Fluxfest Chicago 2013 is a 4 day exploration of Fluxus activity, from its earliest scores and actions to contemporary interpretations. The festivities will occur at various locations in Chicago with the primary exhibit to be featured at the Chicago Cultural Center.

Sokena is an artwork concerned with the actual creative act - the tearing, cutting, pasting, dripping, daubing and mark-making. Therefore, it is a documentation of that particular art-making event rather than an artwork which emphasizes visual aesthetic pleasantries. This fundamental Gutai principle has inspired and influenced generations of artists.

An historical exhibition survey commemorating Gutai, the groundbreaking Japanese avant-garde art movement (1954-1972), featuring original artworks from notable founding members along with new works by international contemporary artists who have been inspired by the Gutai principles.

Founded in 1871, SFAI has been a magnet for adventurous artists and central to the development of many of the country’s most notable art movements. After World War II, the school became a nucleus for Abstract Expressionism, with faculty including Clyfford Still, Ad Reinhardt, Mark Rothko, David Park, Elmer Bischoff, and Clay Spohn. Although painting and sculpture were the dominant mediums for many years, photography had also been among the course offerings. In 1946, Ansel Adams and Minor White established the first fine art photography department in the U.S., with Imogen Cunningham, Edward Weston, and Dorothea Lange among its instructors. By the early 1950s, San Francisco’s North Beach was the West Coast center of the Beat Movement, and music, poetry, and discourse were an intrinsic part of artists’ lives. A distinctly Californian modern art soon emerged that fused abstraction, figuration, narrative, and jazz. The CSAI faculty, which included Park, Bischoff, James Weeks, and Richard Diebenkorn were now the leaders of the Bay Area Figurative Movement. The institute's culture of exploration progressed during the 1960's and was at the forefront of recognizing an expanded vocabulary of art making that was a hybrid of many practices including performance and conceptual art, installation art, video, music, and social activism, which continued to inform much of the work of faculty and students in the 1970s and ’80s. During the late 20th century SFAI expanded their tradition of exploration to include new media practices. After 140 years, the SFAI faculty, students, and alumni continue to investigate and further define contemporary art and the role of artists in today’s global society.

A Book About Death Special Edition Publication

The inaugural exhibit of the international art phenomenon, A Book About Death, was conceived and curated by Matthew Rose (Paris, France) and featured at the Emily Harvey Foundation Gallery, New York, NY during September 2009. Gary A. Bibb was a participant of the first exhibit and also created new artworks for several of the subsequent international exhibitions, including those presented at MUBE (Museu Brasileiro da Escultura - Brazil's national museum of art in Sao Paulo); MoMA - Wales (Museum of Modern Art - Wales, UK); The Fort Worth Community Art Center - Ft. Worth, TX and the Elizabeth Stone Harper Gallery at Presbyterian Collage - Clinton, South Carolina (USA).

Quetzalcoatl Gallery in Seattle, WA (USA), was host to the final exhibit during Nov - Dec 2011. To commemorate the event a special print edition of the book was released in Aug 2012. Below is an online edition of the book. Gary A. Bibb is featured on pages 82 - 83.
